Abstract
Background and Objectives: Among several factors related to the outcome of ear surgery for chronic otitis media, eustachian tube function has been considered to be one of the more important. In our study, the relationship between the results of tympanoplasties and mucociliary clearance function of the tube has been studied.

Materials and Methods: We reviewed the clinical records of the patient who received tympanoplasty type II from March, 1, 1999 to February, 28, 2004 retrospectively. Total 772 cases tympanoplasties was performed. We classified the patients into two groups-mucociliary function tests positive and negative- and randomly selected 100 patients in each group. The outcome of the middle ear surgery was judged by postoperative hearing and presence of otorrhea, perforation of the eardrum.

Results: Success rate was 80.0% in the positive mucociliaty function group and 67.0% in negative function group. The results were statistically significant (p=0.019). Results of preoperative mucociliary function test were correlated with the intraoperative findings of E-tube orifice (p<0.001).

Conclusion: In our study, the existence of positive mucociliary transport constitutes a favourable prognostic factor in the outcome of reconstructive surgery of chronic otitis media.
